Winter Brings More than Snow
There are no bounds to winter fun when you visit the greater Tomahawk area. Snow and ice provide the makings for a number of winter activities, including snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ATVing, ice oval racing and ice fishing.
The motorized crowd has more than 300 miles of expertly groomed snowmobile trails and about 195 miles of groomed ATV trails. The trails are very scenic and cross glacial moraine, upland hardwood, cedar swamps, farm fields and small streams and lakes. The trails are signed so riders know where they are at all times. The trails generally get as much snow as trails further north, but don't get hammered by heavy traffic so they stay in better shape longer. Riders will find restaurants, gasoline stations, taverns and lodging facilities readily available to keep them on the go, or snug as a bug and dreaming of another day on the trails. Lincoln County riders can connect with adjacent county trail systems or go as far the UP if they wish.
From Tomahawk, you can journey down to Merrill for the ice oval races held on Saturdays starting Jan. 15. Other race dates are Jan. 22 & 29 and Feb. 9. Admission to the races is free, although you need a vehicle sticker to enter the Council Grounds State Park where the races are held on the lake.
Don't forget to bring along your XC skis, snowshoes, skates and fishing equipment because there's lots of opportunities to put them to use in Lincoln County. Try the cross-country and snowshoe trails at the Underdown Recreation Area south of Tomahawk, Council Grounds State Park just north of Merrill and the Bill Cross Rapids Wildlife Area west of Merrill.
Hundreds of lakes (more than 725) in the county house favorite winter game species, including walleyes, northern pike and panfish. The action can be fast and furious at times with multiple "flags" sending fishermen scrambling to the ice holes. Various clubs in the Tomahawk area host ice fishing tournaments and welcome families to compete also. |
