Radar Run set for Little St. Germain Lake
The fastest sled at last year's St. Germain Radar Run did an eye-popping 170.1 mph, but it's a safe bet that the nearly two dozen gals entered in the bikini runs also drew a lot of attention. The 2011 Radar Run, sponsored by the St. Germain Radar Racers, will be Friday and Saturday, Jan. 21 & 22 on Little St. Germain Lake. The next day, Sunday, another group plans to run drag races using the same track.
The sponsors say this is the fastest shaved ice track in Wisconsin. Professional groomers shave 1,000 feet down to bare ice on one lane for veteran racers. A second track 660 feet long consists of packed and groomed snow — suitable for anyone to run his or her sled to see how well it performs. Entry fees vary depending on chosen track and number of runs.
Fun runs and practice will be Friday, Jan. 21 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fun runs continue Saturday, when trophy runs take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Top speed wins the Snow King traveling trophy, which goes on display at the International Snowmobile Hall of Fame in St. Germain. Other events Saturday include the popular Bikini Run starting at 2 p.m. The Bikini Run participants raise funds for charity ($12,000 last year). The woman with the combined best time and most pledges gets a trophy and $100. Contestants also race grocery carts (foot power only) down the track as they compete for cash prizes. This event is open to all age groups.
The races will take place on the west bay of the lake near the intersection of Paton Road and Hwy. 70. Spectator parking allowed on the ice, safe conditions permitting. There is a hayride shuttle from the Corner Store, Hwy. J and 70, to the race grounds. Hot food, beverages and music on the ice both days.
