Welcome to the Upper Peninsula!
Our state’s nickname could just as well be “Wet Wisconsin” as we have more than 15,000 inland lakes, 43,000 miles of rivers and 650 miles of Great Lakes shoreline. Much of that watery resource is in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, the main reason countless numbers of residents and out-of-state visitors come here to play and relax in the great outdoors.

The state’s natural resources are simply the biggest bargain around. To better acquaint everybody with those resources and recreation opportunities, the State of Wisconsin puts away the cash register on the first consecutive Saturday and Sunday in June. That weekend is designated Free Fishing Weekend, and you can fish anywhere in the state without a license. You do, of course, have to observe bag limits and other restrictions. Several state parks and DNR regional offices even have “loaner tackle” if you need a rod and reel for yourself and the kids. Remember, kids under the age of 16 don’t need a fishing license at anytime during the year.

Wisconsin also has slated Sunday, June 7 as State Parks Open House. No park entrance sticker needed! They encourage you to explore the parks, many of which have natural wonders such as waterfalls or old growth trees. Check the Wisconsin DNR website for additional details.

We want to put in a plug here for hiring fishing guides, naturalists and outfitters who can take you to the hot spots, the cool spots, and, even though the spotted owl doesn’t reside here, we do have lots of Great Horned Owls and other creatures that make this part of the United States so special. So, from all of us at Assured Publishing welcome to this land we call Up North.
